Launching & Sustaining Small Group Reading Experiences

The Get Up & Get Started Guide to Small Group Reading

Working alongside teachers gives me insight into what questions come to the surface when they think about small group reading experiences.  They often ask, “How do I know which students go in which groups? How long do groups last?  How many groups are happening at once?  What are the other kids doing?  What are the students reading, writing and talking about while in their small group?  How will I know the small group is working?”  These are such important questions and answering them gives way to launching and sustaining small group reading experiences.

This workshop gives participants an opportunity to figure out how to get small groups up and going as well as discover lots of different ways they can use small groups during reading workshop.  Participants will look closely at what a reading workshop looks, sounds and feels like.  Participants will name their beliefs about small group reading instruction, create a vision for small group work, and have opportunities to explore:

  • Small group ideas and schedules for the first days of school

  • Small group ideas and schedules for a few weeks into the school year

  • Strategies and tools for planning small group learning experiences
